My absolute favorites used to be Dan Simmons' Hyperion and Endymion books, but eventually even those wore thin with the whole "love is the main force in the universe" thing and thin characterizations in the Endymion books. Others I've liked in the past were John C. Wright's The Golden Age and sequels, Alastair Reynolds (as I mentioned above, and the reviews of Century Rain at Amazon have steered me clear of that one) and Neuromancer. I also used to really like Dune, but the KJA/BH House prequels and The Butlerian Jihad ruined that, too. (Kinda like how SW Eps I-III retroactively ruined IV-VI for me.) In thinking about it, I've preferred science fiction over fantasy for quite a while, and I can't even find any sci fi that is appealing any more. I checked out Iain Bank's Culture books and didn't care for them, same with anything by Neal Stephenson. As for fantasy that I've liked, well I can't really remember any. When I was much younger I liked the Dragonlance books. I can't stand Tolkien. I've read through the other recommendation and "What are you reading?" threads, but so far nothing in those has appealed to me. I think my problem is that I have a very narrow range of interests. I've even been trying to get back into playing D&D over the last couple of years, but I ended up leaving both campaigns after only a couple of sessions each. Just couldn't maintain interest. I'm not even sure, given that I don't game, why I'm still reading EN World. That's not a slam on this site, it's a great site, but I'm just a spectator who wishes he could play but can't seem to. Thank you. However, I'm convinced that I'm a lost cause. Justin
