OK, now entering the ring in support of SciFi books....

I highly recommend Diane Duane, though she likes to write Star Trek books.

Lois McMaster Bujold is currently on my hot list. Any of her books in the Vorkosigan series is good. The little Admiral kicks ass!

Orson Scott Card is good, although I haven't read any of his Ender books for a while, not for at least four years.

And Peter David is a major author. Read him voraciously, do.

Yeah. Although I've only read his media related stuff...Trek and Babylon 5...all of which is excellent. Another author I've enjoyed via Babylon 5 is J. Gregory Keyes.
