Ellison Lance had a rough childhood in the city of Kilinay. Making his living as a pickpocket and petty thief, Ellison eventually worked his way into the ranks of the Phantoms and became a prominent member. He works throughout Aera making and carrying out his contracts, which range from assassination to simple item retrieval. He will rarely kill unless he can benefit from it, he upholds his contracts, and is one of the best assassins in Aera.

DM's notes: Ellison was one of the party's earlier antagonists. Since the first adventure the party has interacted with him and finally managed to defeat him in combat in the 10th adventure (when the party was 8th level). In the meantime, Ellison stole the magic scrolls the party needed to free the wizard Cloudgatherer, almost assassinated a simulacrum known as Diram, slew Paneth Dern and nearly killed the ranger Gwen by leaving her for dead, travelled on the same boat as the party to Polary, kidnapped the paladin Katrina Purelight, and nearly escaped with the Summersword, but was defeated by the party. Ellison only kills if he has something to gain, usually he will leave his victims alive in the event he gets a contract to assassinate them later. Above all, he sticks to his contracts as a Phantom, but won't hesitate to break laws or defy one government or another.

Skills (91 points) and Feats (6): Balance +7 (Tumble Synergy), Climb +8 (8), Intuit Direction +10 (8), Listen +15 (13), Ride (gryphon) +18 (13), Spot +15 (13), Swim +8 (8), Tumble +10 (5), Use Rope +18 (13), Wilderness Lore +12 (10); [Ambidexterity], Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, Mounted Archery, Mounted Combat, Point Blank Shot, Quickdraw, [Track], [Two-Weapon Fighting], Weapon Focus (longsword).

Special Attacks: Favored enemies: Sheila gains a bonus to damage rolls, Bluff, Listen, Sense Motive, Spot, and Wilderness Lore checks against certain creatures (+2 vs. orcs, +1 vs. trolls).

Possessions: +1 featherweight longsword (generates light, counts as light weapon), +2 longsword, +2 leather armor, shortbow, quiver, 30 arrows, gryphon rider badge (+1 natural armor, +2 luck bonus to saving throws).

Gryphon rider spells per day: 2/1. Base DC = 12 + spell level. Caster level 3rd.

Ranger spells per day: 2. Base DC = 12 + spell level. Caster level 3rd.

Languages: Common, orc, sylvan.

Winter, Sheila’s Gryphon: CR 6; Large (beast); HD 9d10+27; hp 100; Init +2 (+2 Dex); Spd 30 ft., fly 80 ft. (average); AC 19 (-1 Size, +2 Dex, +8 Natural); Atk Bite +10 (2d6+6), 2 claws +5 (1d4+4); SA pounce, rake (1d6+2); SQ improved evasion, share spells, empathic link, share saving throws, Scent; AL N; SV Fort +12, Ref +8, Will +5; Str 20, Dex 15, Con 16, Int 7, Wis 13, Cha 8.

Skills: Jump +8, Listen +6, Spot +11 (+4 to Spot in daylight).

Easy going and cheerful best describe Sheila Freefall. She has a laid back attitude about most aspects of life, even when exploring a dangerous dungeon or staring face right in the eye. Sheila caught Daren Sune’s attention while he was delivering a magic item from the wizards of Gryphon’s Nest to a druid in Dranen Forest. Sheila spent her time among the woods with the druids, killing orcs, trolls, and other sub-human creatures attempting to ravage the forest. Her ability to seek out her enemies and drive them from the forest particularly impressed the leader of the Riders. He discovered early that a threat to a forest is one of the few things that can set off Sheila’s temper.

As a Rider, Sheila often takes some of the more mundane jobs to help out her fellow riders (plus she enjoys traveling around on Winter’s back). While going about her duties she carries around her dual short swords, gifts from the Dranen Druids, along with an unassuming attitude about her tasks. Sheila is very protective about her gryphon, Winter, which she lets no else one ride (and Winter sees to this as well).

DM's Notes: Sheila is my first NPC to use the Gryphon Rider prestige class. She has interacted with the party on several occasions and is currently the envy of Gwen, the party's ranger. Currently, Sheila serves as the party's only "link" to news on the bluff of Gryphon's Nest and she is fond of the party as well.

Eve is the most beautiful creature in Aera and she should be served as a goddess: faithfully and unquestioningly. At least that’s what she’d like people to think and they might even have to think this while under one of her spells. She will use dozens upon dozens of pawns to get what she wants, preferring indirect control over a situation rather than getting her hands dirty.

Eve traditionally operates in the Free North. She has had her eyes on Mydrana and the wizard Cloudgatherer for quite some time. Her organization, the Talaney, labors to bring the free north under her control.

Spells Per Day: 3/2/1/1. Base DC 12 + spell level. Caster level 7th.

Languages: Celestial, common, dwarven.

Leader of the Silver Swords, highly respected citizen of Aenith, the beautiful librarian of the famous Great Library, Katrina Purelight is the embodiment of paladin ideals. Swept up on an adventure with Cloudgatherer when they were both teenagers, Katrina is no stranger to death and mystery. She is often seen with the magus of Mydrana, and when she is absent, Mydrana is the best place to look for her.

As leader of the Silver Swords, Katrina keeps tabs on the movements of the Mithral Blades as well as Eve Darkstar’s Talaney agents. Through numerous agents, and the backing of the free city of Aenith, Katrina and her swords attempt to thwart evil at every turn. Currently, Katrina is searching for the legendary sword of Surial, the most revered paladin of Aera. She awaits the chance to challenge Ilthond Doombringer, and bring an end to his tyranny. In the meantime, the forces of Aenith and Polary clash in regular skirmishes between patrol parties.

DM's Notes: Katrina serves as the current champion of good in Aera. Unlike some settings, there are not an abundance of high level do-gooders, Katrina and Cloudgatherer (yes, I have an NPC with my name) being the only pair of prominently known "high level" characters. The party has had to subdue her in combat (had a fairly easy time of it as well), and rescue her from the Polarian army. As of this writing, she is questing to atone for her actions while dominated by the Dark Wizard.

Magic Abilities: Through permanency and wish spells, Ivelan has the following continuous abilities: protection from arrows, detect magic (continuous), true seeing, tongues, comprehend languages. Elven traits: immune to sleep effects, +2 save versus enchantment, low light vision, proficient with: longsword, shortbow, longbow, composite longbow, and composite shortbow, +2 to Listen, Search, and Spot checks, automatic Search check when within 5 feet of hidden door, only needs 4 hours of “trance”.

Possessions: staff of power (41 charges), robe of the archmagi, cloak of resistance +5, amulet of lesser ironguard*, ring of spell turning, ring of evasion. Ivelan also has access to a collection of magic items and has access to the treasure vaults of Huranti.

Wizard Spells per Day: 4/7/6/6/6/6/5/5/5/5/2/1. Base DC = 20 + spell level, 22 + spell level for enchantment and evocation spells. Caster level 20th. Ivelan has all of the spells listed in the Player’s Handbook as well as several additional spells.

Languages: Abyssal, common, draconic, dwarven, elven, infernal

Royal wizard and archmagus of the elven kingdom of Huranti, Ivelan is the most powerful wizard in the known world. For decades he has manipulated the elven king, used royal funds for magic experiments and research, and crushed any resistance to the crown unmercifully.

Powerful and arrogant describe Ivelan to a “T”. It is very rare that he does not achieve his goals and he does not hesitate to use a high degree of force. Battles with Ivelan are short, often using enough magical power early on to decimate even the mightiest of adversaries.

As of late, Ivelan has been looking toward expanding the elven monarchy to rule over the other races of Aera. He feels the elves are far superior to the other races and should rule over them for their own good. Like most elves, he has been slow to make his decisions, but the time is fast approaching when he will make an attempt at realizing his ambition. In the past few years, his personal organization, the Sulimarin, has been looking around Aera for potential targets.

DM's Notes: Ivelan is the only epic level character in Aera (as far as the setting is concerned). He's also one of the main antagonists for high powered adventures as he is a very powerful wizard of the elven kingdom of Huranti. The "Outsiders of Aera" have only seen him once, briefly, during their first adventure as they witnessed him imprison the wizard Cloudgatherer. It is the party's overarching goal to free the trapped wizard so he can send them back to their respective planes.

Thought I'd post a monster or two. Here's one I got the idea from another forum. Enjoy!

Find Ilthond Doombringer in HTML.

Ilthond Doombringer

Physical Description: Height 6’ 4”; weight 210 lb; gray eyes; silver hair; almost always wears the Armament of Kildonis when conducting royal business.

Male half-elven Ftr15: CR 15; Medium (half-elf); HD 15d10+45; hp 157; Init +1; Spd 20 (40) ft.; AC 27 (+15 Armor, +2 Dex); Atk with Lightslayer (+23/+18/+13, 1d10+8 and +2d6 against good-aligned creatures, 15-20x2); SQ half-elven qualities; AL LE; SV Fort +12, Ref +7, Will +7; Stat increases +1 Str at 4th, 8th, and 12th; Str 21, Dex 14, Con 16, Int 13, Wis 11, Cha 9.

Skills (54 points) and Feats (14): Climb +24* (19), Craft (weapon smith) +16 (15), Jump +15* (10), Listen +1 (0, Half-Elf Bonus), Search, +2 (0, Half-Elf Bonus), Spot +1 (0, Half-Elf Bonus), Swim +15* (10); Blind-Fight, Cleave, Dodge, Exotic Weapon Proficiency (bastard sword), Great Cleave, Improved Critical (bastard sword), Iron Will, Leadership (16), Mobility, Power Attack, Rushed Attack**, Spring Attack, Sunder, Whirlwind.
* - Does not include the armor check penalty of –3

Special Qualities: Half-elven qualities: immunity to sleep spells and +2 save vs. enchantment spells or effects, low-light vision, +1 bonus to Listen, Search, and Spot checks. Can use elven equipment as an elf could.

Possessions: Armament of Kildonis: Lightslayer (+3 keen unholy mithral bastard sword), Klameril (+3 shadow silent mithral full plate), and Lifeguard (+2 large mithral shield). Ring of freedom of movement, boots of striding and springing.

Languages: Common, orc.

What Ilthond lacks in subtlety he makes up for with brute force. His personal philosophy is “If force is not solving your problem, then you are not using enough force.” During his adventuring career, his party managed to discover some of the lost equipment of the long dead warlord Kildonis (Lightslayer, Klameril, and Lifeguard), who united the land of Polary under a single ruler hundreds of years ago. After years of adventuring, Ilthond and his party, the Mithral Blades, staged a bloody coup and seized control of Polary. Doombringer has since extended the borders of Polary by taking several border cities as well as officially creating a full blown organization from his old adventuring group: the Mithral Blades.

Ilthond’s current ambitions include taking the independent city of Aenith, as well as extending his border by capturing several of the smaller independent cities, which sit along important trade routes in the Free North.

DM's Notes: This is one of the more distant adversaries of the Outsiders of Aera. I doubt he will ever confront the party directly, but he does direct the Mithral Blades, an organization that has been hampering the party for quite some time.
