OA/Rokugan: Shadowlands Taint

Hi,

Are the game rules for the Shadowlands taint presented in OA and Rokugan meant to be compatible, because I'm having difficulty making sense of them?

In OA, a character's taint score is taken off his Con and Wis, and a score of 10 is pretty serious -- the character is then drawn to the Shadowlands, never to return.

In Rokugan, the table on page 137 goes up to 90 taint points, and you need 11 points to start getting a taint modifier which you can use on attack rolls etc at the cost of accumulating more taint.

To make things more complicated, Creatures of Rokugan presents a number of special abilities that tainted characters can use at the cost of accumulating more taint points.

Anyone understand this?

Cheers

There are taint points and taint ranks. Ten taint points fill a rank. Your rank is equivelant to your score.

I generally play the real Legend of the Five Rings RPG, but I hope that helps. Typically, you aren't going to find someone who makes it to 90 points without being lost to the Shadowlands.

Out of curiosity, is there any built-in mechanic in L5R to stop someone like Daigotsu -- who is already "lost" to the Shadowlands -- from accumulating an infinite Taint score by casting spells over and over again?

Once you are lost you no longer aquire taint. Jigoku has you, it no longer needs to grant you any more power.

Additionally, all rings generally stop at 10, with only the rarest exceptions.
