This post draws materials from the Forgotten Realms Source Book (Divine Disciple), Defenders of the Faith [DoF] (Contemplative, Master of Shrouds, Prestige Domain List), and Oriental Adventures [OA] (Shaman Class Listing and suggested allowable adaptions of prestige classes from class builder books) I play an Shaman, and took the Divine Disciple prestige class from the Forgotten Realms book. For those of you who do not own the Oriental Adventures book, there is a Shaman class that gets two patron spirits which function like domains for a cleric. I have several topics/questions that I would like to throw out for discussion. 1) Prestige Domains. A Shaman has no patron deity. Therefore, if a Shaman takes a PrC that grants a prestige domain such as the Contemplative [DoF] or the Divine Disciple, how does he/she figure out what domains are available. Normally, when a cleric gets a choice for a prestige domain, it must either come from his/her deity's remaining domains or from a list such as was printed in DoF for classes like the Contemplative. Question: 1)If a Shaman gets to choose a prestige domain, what may he/she choose? 2)Is this totally in the realm of DM opinion? 2) Prestige Classes Unlike the other standard PHB classes, pairing PrCs with a totally new class like the Shaman presents somewhat of a problem. The Contemplative has already been mentioned as a problem. Obviously deity-based prestige classes like the Champion of Kord from Dragon Magazine have to be cut. The OA book has a small blurb on what PrC from the class builder books the designers fealt were appropriate for an OA campaign. (I don't have the page number handy, I'll have to look that up). Question: 3)How would you adapt the Divine Disciple class for an OA campaign, if you allowed it? 4)Should the DD be considered a quasi-deity based PrC and not allowed, or could a Shaman declare one of his/her patron spirits as the patron for the DD PrC? Furthermore, adaptation is difficult for classes like the Master of Shrouds. The Master of Shrouds (MoS) PrC from DoF [Aren't acronyms fun?] states that upon taking the 1st level in the class, a MoS gains access to the Death, Evil, and Protection Domains. However, there is no Evil Domain in the OA book for Shamans to take. This indicates to me that there is precedent for allowing Shamans to take non-OA specific domains, at the bare minimum domains from the PHB. 5) The 3rd Domain at 11th level. What would you allow? OA domains only? OA and PHB? Anything d20? It seems that a lot of the adaptation work for Shamans is just left in the air for players and DMs to decide. I would like to hear some of the theory/practical application from players and DMs who have had to rule on this kind of stuff. I have numbered the questions in case people want to respond with a simple yes or no or other short answer. Thanks for reading.
