Odd question about paper.

Not sure if this is the right place, but since all discussions of the business and print side seem to go in here, I figured it was worth a shot. I need to print a foldable poster, one that doesn't lose much or any of the coloring at the folds. Since RPG companies like Wotc and Paizo create great fold up maps for book inserts, I naturally thought of those as a place to start. Does anyone know what paper/printing process is used to create those? Every attempt to have my work printed doesn't survive the fold test well. Thanks.
