Of Runestaffs and Spell Casting Items

A Runestaff is an item that contains spell knowledge, but no spell slots or charges. The user must supply the spell power, in the form of an arcane spell or spell slot of the appropriate level. You select the spell knowledge you need fromthe Runestaff, cast a spell of matchinfg level (or burn the spell slot if you prefer that terminology, and voila!

I prefer the "burn the spell slot" terminology, since you use material components etc for the spell in the staff, not the spell whose slot you are burning.

They're a great addendum for a Bard or Sorcerer, who have limited ranges of known spells.

The question: Can you power one using another power source, such as a Wand or Scroll?

Can you power it with an innate Spell Like Effect of the appropriate level? (such as a Drow's once-a-day Levitate ability.)

What about other spell casting items, like a Ring of Spell Storing?

What about an item that allows you to cast a given spell X number of times per day?

What about an item that simply allows you to cast spell X? Note that some Rings are described as workings "as the spell", but don't say they allow you to cast the spell. Others specifically say that they allow you to cast the spell. The first set is obviously out, in that there is no casting, just a spell like effect.

For those not familiar with the Runestaff, it can contain a number of different spells, but each one has a maximum number of times it can be invoked in a given day. The caster must still supply any material components or Exp needed for the casting of the spell in the Staff.

I like the imagination behind the question but personally I'd be hesitant to allow other spell-casting items to invoke the runestaff's spells. Why? I simply refer to the opening line of the runestaff entry (on page 224 of the MIC):

"A runestaff allows the wielder to use her own arcane energy to generate magical effects." Emphasis mine.

But surely a somewhat more powerful variation on the standard rune staff could have the flexibility you describe.
