You've played a generic adventuring rogue, but come on: Don't you really want to play a thief?

A thief is a canny warrior of the streets. He combines stealth and action to steal what he wants or needs. Many thieves are selfish footpads and bandits, but others are heroic outlaws who fight and steal for the good of the common people. Thieves may be good or evil, but above all, they follow their own law. They value freedom and the power to take their own risks and run their own lives.

Thieves are stealthy warriors cut from the mold of heroic (or "pulp") fantasy. They're sneaky but able swordsmen who gain special benefits from fighting in the shadows. They don't just lauch "sneak attacks" -- they backstab!

OGL: The Thief is a seven page Frontline core class from Mob United Media. Compatible with the world's most popular roleplaying game, Frontline classes always have the best Base Attack Bonus and are tough enough to stand beside your party's other warriors. Check out other Frontline classes: The Arcane Duelist, The Warbard and the Fighting Priest!

Okay, I've gone ahead and purchased this--my first buy off RPG Edge, incidentally. ;) I like it overall, but I've got a question.

I'm a little confused on the backstab ability, since it's usually leaving a threatened square, not entering it, that provokes an AoO. Was your intent that part of the special ability is that entering the threatened area draws the AoO even though it wouldn't normally do so? Or was the intent that the ability only functions if the movement happens to draw the AoO for other movement reasons--such as, say, the guy moves within the threatened area, so he both enters and leaves a threatened square?

It's meant to clarify that it applies to moving through a threatened area but *not* for the purpose of attacking the thief, to rule out situations like a bull rush or a nonexpert unarmed against armed. You can't backstab someone who provokes an AoO to affect you in combat. So if Jimmy the Paladin runs past you you can backstab him, but if he's running at you to bull rush, you can't.

These AoOs are not really provoked for move actions, but in the case of bull rush it isn't always intuitively clear that the AoO comes from the effect, not the movement to get there.

This may sound like a stupid question, but I take it all the products in the series are for OGL fantasy, not modern?

This is true. It's all fantasy. The theme of Frontline is that the classes compose an all-warrior party that is still complete when it comes to many adventuring tasks. Think of it as being D&D if you were playing like a squad of marines in the novel Starship Troopers. "Everybody fights."

The product has been revised to present this rule more clearly, as well as tighten up the content slightly and rename a single ability. I believe in keeping my products in good shape! As usual for RPGNow, you can simply download the products again to get the revised file.
