Tomorrow, I'll be running the first session of my Epic game. My players have rolled up 30th level characters; they will be fighting the gods. This is purely to fool around with high-level 4th Edition. There are two fights tomorrow; one against a flight of dragons, meant to familiarize my players with their epic abilities against a less challenging foe. And then, the main event... Ogremoch, Primordial Lord of Earth.
The fight will occur in a large cavern. Ogremoch will fight alone, against six PCs. At least, it will seem that way. I plan to give the environment a life of its own, with rock spikes jabbing up, volcanoes appearing and spewing forth magma, and sudden quakes and cracks trying to swallow the players. In addition, there will be pits, which lead to a network of tunnels beneath the battlefield, filled with weak minions eager to tear Ogremoch's foes limb from limb.
To make this more of a "boss fight", I've created two floating islands (pictured below). These two stones are powerfully magical; any ranged attacks made against Ogremoch are instead re-directed to strike these giant stones. They each take 500 points of damage before they explode. Alternately, they can be deactivated manually with a successful arcana check, performed atop one of the islands. Each island has a guardian (an earth elemental) who will try to stop any characters from disabling the stone.
All in all, I think it should be an exciting fight. My mostly-ranged party will need to fly up to the giant islands and deal with them, while the fighter will be keeping Ogremoch busy. The party is loaded up with three leaders, so keeping the fighter alive will not be a problem. But I think the islands will make this a fight to remember.
One last thought... what to call them? I was going to call them lodestones, but if anyone has a better suggestion, I'm all ears. Also, the players will receive a little handout telling them exactly what these stones are, what they do, and how to deactivate them.
