My wife and I (hehe makes me sound older than 19 doesn’t it) are planning to move to North Carolina this spring. What’s a nice city in the north western part of the state (Charlotte/ Raleigh area-ish). We’re going to scout out the area for apartments and such on April 5th-18th and I any tips would be fantastic. Being in the vicinity of a good game store would be good. Also It’d be nice to be able to go to the gamesday. What city is that in?

Also I can transfer with Blockbuster and she can with Barnes and Noble. Not superb jobs but better to transfer than go without a job. We both are going to college online, so no need to locate near a campus; though if there be gamers I’ll be there too. Well you get the point of the post. Any help would be great, Thanks.

Glad to see you moving to the sunny south!

Personally, I think the Raleigh-Durham area will be your best bet. In fact, Cary North Carolina, which is in the area, has the greatest Barnes and Noble I have seen! :)

Also, there are more than 16 universities in the Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill area including NC State, UNC- Chapel Hill, and Duke.

Gamedays are held in Raleigh at NC State University.

Glad to hear you're coming and eager to get into the game day. If you want to be near the Game Day, a good number of game stores, as well as UNC Chapel Hill, Duke, NC State, Weselyan, NC Central University, and several other smaller universities, I'd suggest the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area. It's a nice area that since it has three medium sized cities together makes for one bigger city, yet spread out enough that it doesn't feel like a huge city (like Charlotte does).

Based on your situation, my guess is you guys would be best to go for the SouthWest Durham/ North Chapel Hill area. As there are several of the places you work in the area, and Chapel Hill has UNC and a great college atmosphere. As far as apartment living goes, just about anywhere in the area would be good. A year or two ago apartments where building like crazy and charging whatever they wanted due to the dot-com boom giving them lots of people with disposable income to spend on housing. When it turned into the dot-com bust they found themselves with lots of empty housing, and they're still recovering from that. Most apartments in the area still offer incentives and decent monthly rates.

NC Game Day is held on NCSU's campus, which is in Raleigh. The Raleigh area also would be good for you guys, as it has everything you requested. My only problem with Raleigh is it is the capitol, and as such has a bigger city feel to it. Personal preference is all.

If you have any other questions about game store locations, universities, or apartments, feel free to shoot me an email.

You can't go wrong across the entire northern part of NC, from Winston-Salem to Greensboro to Raleigh-Durham. My then-wife and I scouted the area about five years ago and almost moved there. Lovely cities, great people, highly recommended.

Cary-Apex might be a little pricey, though. Corporate headquarters of the company I work for relocated to Cary about eight years ago, so I've been there a few times. Beautiful area, though, if you can find something in your price range.

Good luck.

Any of the major metro areas in NC should have plenty of Blockbusters and at least one Barnes and Noble. Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill and Charlotte are definitely the big metro areas, but Wilmington (on the coast 90 minutes or so southeast of Raleigh), Winston-Salem (central-ish in the state) and Asheville (to the west in the mountains) are also decent-sized. Of those Asheville has the smallest population, but a lot of natural beauty to make up for it.

Oh, and in case you haven't found it yet, here's a website with links to a bunch of Chambers of Commerce in various NC towns. All of the ones I clicked had at least some information for people relocating to the area.

Good luck on your move.

(Oh, and since you said you'll be scouting in early April, I'll just mention that when choosing a place to live, you will definitely want air conditioning.)
