At the risk of raising the ire of the 'cold & hard' science people, but dice are NOT random. Studies in paranormal phenomena and random probability show that when humans are introduced into the equation, random probability curves get skewed. In some studies, they think the component is emotion - people with expectations of a certain outcome had a higher probability of getting the desired outcome than simple hard probability allows. My 26 years of dice rolling confirms this. People in my game group think I have absolutely freaky ability with the dice. My character stats are usually well above the norm that probablility suggests. I roll three times the number of confirmed criticals than anyone else. All my rolls are witnessed and I have used other peoples dice with the same effect. I can't explain it rationally. I simply 'feel good and positive' that I will roll good and the dice respond by skewing probability in my favor. I have had days when I was in a particularly 'dark' mood (rare) and the dice respond by rolling absolutely bloody awful for me. Enough so, that other people have commented on what is going on when I have these few rare days that the dice seemly reflect my mood. I have experimented with dice and I can validated that emotional expectation is a factor in dice probability. I remember one experience quite vividly. One of our players had one very horrendous night with the dice. Enough so, that this normally calm and serene guy was ranting and raving and ended up hurling his dice against a far wall. Everyone knew my extraordinary luck with the dice. Partly to see if I can validate my 'belief' in emotional expectation affecting probability and partly to calm the guy down, I offered to transfer my good luck to the dice and 'bless' them. The guy agreed. I handled his dice a bit, made a bit of a show of 'blessing' them and handed them back. It was incredible. The dice 'worked' great for him the rest of the night. The rest of the group was floored by this. Supernatural power, psychic ability, the occult......not hardly. I changed his expectations. I 'blessed' his dice and his emotional expectation and belief was that it would work - and it did. He skewed probability because he expected that outcome. Think about it. Those of you who have a poor night with the dice. You throw a string of bad rolls. Emotionally and subconciously, you are negative and have expectations the dice will work against you. Each negative roll reinforces your negative expectation and your die rolls get worse. The result is an evening where everyone literally believe that dice are blessed or cursed for an individual. And these are people who know about hard rules of probability and the fact that dice have no memory, but can't explain it when probability gets skewed for them or against them. So the next time your dice seem to have turned 'traitor' on you, change your expectations and emotional outlook to be postive. Have a sincere desire for a good outcome. Really work at it. Don't be surprised if you find the dice respond.
