November 1, 2003: Originally released in February of 2003, The Book of Distinctions & Drawbacks rapidly became a runaway best seller. To date, more than 450 copies of the BODD have been sold in PDF format. "My expectations were extremely modest. I designed and wrote the BODD on a whim, because I was surprised that nothing like it had been, to the best of my knowledge, commercially released," said Scott Lynch, the only human being behind Cryptosnark Games despite the grandiose tone of this section of the press release. "No, seriously, I'm sitting here talking to my cat and my mug of hot chocolate, and that's the company. What, you think some guy actually goes around interviewing people like me for press releases? Who would pay that guy? He'd be like a minor character in a Penny Arcade strip, for crying out loud. "Anyhow, the response to the BODD blew me away, and sales are continually strong even after nine months. The support given to the BODD by hundreds of gamers has provided me with time and resources to devote to quite a few other projects that are a bit less commercial, at least in an immediate sense. I'm very grateful for that, so, with the revised and expanded BODD about to roll out, I've decided to release the bulk of the old BODD as freeware, 100% Open Game Content. "The Freeware Edition of The Book of Distinctions & Drawbacks has been tweaked slightly to be compatible with both the 3.0 and 3.5 versions of the fantasy d20 system, and it's received a bit of a cosmetic treatment. The freeware edition will be in landscape format, optimized for screen viewing. It will contain a fairly straightforward and mostly binary system of character flaws and background advantages. To the best of my knowledge, it remains the only such system commercially available for the d20 system in any format, and from this point on the original BODD will be as non-commercial as they come." The Freeware Edition of The Book of Distinctions & Drawbacks will be available on Monday, November 3, 2003. Look for it at: http://www.rpgnow.com Cheers and best!
