old dungeon tiles sets still worth the buy?

i will say this as a fairly new DM, and a newb to all of the collectible stuff WotC offers....their dungeon tiles are fantastic. i used a white board and dry erase markers before with my group, but this last session i used dungeon tiles stuck to black foam board w/ sticky tack and my group LOVED it. they said it really added to the experience.

oh and my Heroscape trees added to the experience as well.

i dont really understand though why WotC would want to put stuff out of print after only a year (or less). give it some time! geez.

Keeping something in print isn't as easy as people seem to think, especially when you've got to print a fairly large volume without a guarantee of sell-through the second time around. You can still find some of the more recent sets for their MSRP or lower on Amazon and Ebay, which indicates there is still stock floating around from the initial print runs of those sets.

The Master Sets are their answer to the out-of-print problem.

I do the same thing (black poster board + tack) and it's great. I can prep encounters ahead of time, have everything placed, and save precious game time by just laying down the board instead of sorting through tiles and examining my DM map.

yeah one of my players used to say "loading time" when i was drawing on the white board. the dungeon tiles are pretty sweet though. i'm continuing to look for good pre-made 3d props for my maps. i know there are papercraft representations out there (worldworksgames makes awesome stuff) but i dont want to BUILD anything. i want it pre-made/painted and ready to go.

my wife likes to go to the craft store and normally i dread going there, but i went looking for potential terrain for my maps. i didnt really find a whole lot, but ive seen some videos and pics online from slyflourish's site (i think) where he has taken glass vases and filled them with spiderweb and tea lights. so i'll probably do that at some point. the other thing im looking at using for a cool effect are the little mirror squares. they come in a baggie of about 15 or so for like $2. i was thinking of getting some of those and making...um...something. i dunno...ideas?
