Old D&D didn't seem to really give thought to that factor until UE's "Social Class" tables and the later addition of NWPs.  Even if it was something simple akin to the old 1E "Secondary Profession" table, with maybe some expansion (and customization for one-offs for something like "Ghost Elf"), it would go a long way to de-monolith the races.  I'd shy away from any strong mechanics, but I think it would be fair for someone to have "Farmer" as a Background and go "Hey, I used to work on a farm as my Background, can I try to safely milk the Catoblepas?"** And if you think I'm joking, look up Death Head Cheese in Aurora's Whole Realms catalog ....</blockquote>
