I mentioned this game in another thread and got a couple XP from people who liked it. I don't want to clutter that thread, which is about another topic entirely. But it's high time the good people of ENWorld got a chance to take a look at the genius that is Old School Hack. This is a game that ENWorlder Kiznit has been working on for the last year, inspired by, and using some of the mechanics from, Red Box Hack. Kiznit had it in a playable format and invited some of us who attended GenCon to play it with him. I've known Kiz for several years and he's a good friend and all around nice guy. So I figured hey, why not? But I went into it with my expectations pretty low for a game that was basically a homebrew system that had been barely playtested. I was blown away by how fun it was. If I had to summarize what I think is best about the game, it's that it uses fairly simple mechanics that interact in very interesting ways and leave a ton of room for great roleplaying. I think it captures the (pardon the cliche) "old school sense of wonder" with some pretty groovy and modernized mechanics. It's fast and fun and was the highlight of my GenCon. Since we've been back there has been a pretty active discussion of the mechanics and play over at the Forums to refine a few aspects of the game. In its present form it is totally playable, although it might require a bit of explanation from those who have already played it in order to do so easily. Kiznit is currently working on some further documents to walk people through character creation and running combat. If old school style gaming is something you're interested in then I'd highly recommend giving it a look.
