I don't think there's any such thing as "too much help" You know, I've seen it before where some "set in their way" player thinks something is a waste because it is personally irrelevant to them....its either that they've got a better way already, or it doesn't suit their style. And they really don't seem to grasp the idea that maybe this product isn't just for them. Understand that a lot of guys who post actively on message boards, discussing things like "is X class broken" or "I think there's too much magic, how can I tone it down?" These guys aren't your average gamer...we just think we are because we're so embroiled in it. Hell, most average gamers have probably never been to a game con. (I've been playing almost 20 years and never went.) I play with average gamers. Half of us own the three cores. A couple have only the PHB. Me and one other guy have small stacks of extra books, like Tome of Horrors, Wilderlands etc. If a new player came into the group with a 20 pound stack of WOTC hardcover supplements, it'd probably raise a few eyebrows, everyone wondering if this guy is a little too into what he's doing. Not that there's anything wrong with that...but that's how it would be. Anyway, we all have a reasonably good working knowledge of the rules. But I personally am the only one in our group who is able to DM 3x well rules-wise....and I only just got to that point. (and I'm not being arrogant, I only mean that I'm the one in the group that can tell you how to grapple without looking it up...that kind of thing) And 3x has been out what, 6 years? If you're playing twice a week for 6 years then you probably don't need much in the way of help. I only played on and off...real life just got in the way...never long enough to get really cool with encounters and such. Like Merric, never was much good at running bad-guy spellcasters, among other things. I say, if the designers want to tell me that Bargle the Black will likely cast mage armor on himself first, then climb up to the bell tower while his orcs block for him...then rain down Melf's Acid Arrows on the party, then that's totally fine with me. I appreciate the tip. And I think the average gamer does too.
