One Game - Two Systems

Monster Zero

First Post
Has anyone tried to run a game using two different game systems?

I have a idea for a game that blends Jonny Quest/Godzilla/Thunderbirds/X-Files. :D LOL! I know thats quite a mix. But here is my problem. I would like to use D20 Modern or Spycraft for main game system and use a modified Mutants and Masterminds for the Giant Monster part of the game. Do you think this would work?

Well, my first response is, um,.......

:D

It would kind of depend on how you were going to handle it in general. The basic problem comes in interactions between the two. For instance, what happens when Race Bannon tries to shoot down Godzilla with a rocket launcher? Do you use the Spycraft stats for the rocket launcher, or the M&M stats?

Perhaps a better, cleaner solution would be to treat giant monsters as a separate sort of entity in the system. Vehicles have a different set of stats from people, and different rules governing their movement. So should giant monsters. And, rather than just giving them a LOT of wounds, give them a slightly different way of tracking damage. The Mega-Damage rules from Pallaidum's Rifts are breaking through my conscious effort to suppress them. But, the basic idea is that small-arms fire just won't hurt Godzilla, no matter how much lead you throw at him, or how accurately. Even vehicle ordinance would have limited effect. Maybe represent it with a very high DR rating. Naturally, they should also be largely immune to feints, taunts, trip attempts, or grapples from normal humans. But, monster-on-monster combat would be handled almost exactly like human-on-human combat (though with a LOT more damage to the scenery).

Yes, that exactly what I am trying to do. I want to have rules so a Agent of the United Nations Planetary Threat Task Force could fight it out with a Alien Infiltrator from Planet X while Doctor Zennus' Gaint Guardian Robot could rumble with the alien's 300 foot tall mutant Space Lobster with radioactive eye beams (TM):D at the same time. While a tank main gun would splat the agent it would just bounce off the Space Lobster. I don't want to have creatures with thousands of hit points though.

So, rule that all damage done against a monster is divided by a hundred, and all damage done by a monster is multiplied by a hundred. Monster-on-monster damage washes out to normal damage. And, this is done before DR is applied. So, a bullet-proof vest has almost exactly zero effect when being eaten by Mothra. And, a sniper rifle rounds down to zero effect when used against Voltron. (Side note: Voltron would obviously use giant rules when assembled, and vehicle rules when separated.) This is similar to the size modifications in the d20 system, taken to the extreme of giant monsters.

The one thing you need to be careful with, that ended up causing problem in Rifts, is don't let normal people be capable of taking or dealing monster-grade damage. A soldier that effectively has a DR of a couple hundred is going to be a nightmare.

Why not just use Mutants & Masterminds for the whole thing? It has a scalable system right in it. No reason PL 5 folks can't go up against PL 20 giant monsters. They just have to be very careful.
