Hm, awkward. I'd sooner not split the group into loners and doing so does place rather a lot of emphasis on Baran while others twiddle their thumbs. I'm all for crunchy characterisation, but this is a group game and I'd sooner all solutions to the starting point model were designed to keep the group together, not at the complete expense of logic, though I think a certain level of compromise may be required. My own take: ok, dwarfs and heirlooms, tricky one, but a few things: for somebody who works in and around Mirkwood, it seems pretty suicidal of him to set out alone, even if he is a dwarf. He knows what lies out there in the trees. In a cascading stylesheet kinda way, he'd probably put the value of his own neck above traditions concerning the retrieval of stolen heirlooms. Second, I'm not really sure this as stalwart a dwarven trait. Didn't the dwarfs of The Hobbit turn to Gandalf and employ a hobbit burglar to help them retrieve their stolen heirlooms? My suggestion would be that he *wants* to set out alone, dwarven pride or whatever the reason, but the others won't let him. Ulfang, particularly, wouldn't dream of letting his short friend stomp off to certain death (I'm expecting quite a good relationship between those two, btw. Talk about Little & Large). Elves don't care much for the solitude of dwarfs, and tagging along would surely infuriate Baran enough to warrant a good laugh. A knight would probably feel a personal responsibility to track down the thief, while I admit to being completely stumped as to why the horsemaster would tag along?? Thoughts anyone? Think Aragorn facing the Dimholt road and a certain elf and dwarf refusing to allow him the dignity of the solitude he prefers. "Have you learned nothing of the way of Dwarfs?" They were companions at that point, but let's remember this gang have been working together, probably for a good several months, at the logging camp and a certain level of comradery will be present, especially for the camp foreman who everyone will know quite well. Yes, certainly. I personally went with the parchment because I though, it being made of wood pulp, he'd be more likely to cherish it and maybe he took it with him because its one of the few wood related possessions he has. The glass and frame to keep it preserved against the ages, of course. I like the alternative look of the artefact, but maybe without the impressive rollers. The point is, it's really very unimpressive to look at, hence the mystery of the theft. There really *is* a lot of master weapons and armour knocking about this camp :)
