Up to the</p><p>DMs discretion.</p><p>(2) Apply only the largest modifier from this category.</p><p></p><p>Succeeding at the check provides some minute details (knowing a person is going to knock on your door within the next few seconds, that something dangerous is going to pass through the area, and so on). Beating the DC by greater amounts results in more information (perhaps the persons first name, or what type of creature, etc.) depending upon the situation. If you fail a Sense Motive check, you cannot gain information related to that specific event.
