Some ravens are able to speak simple words as I recall, although I admit that the SRD does not mention this for ravens. On the other hand, a wizard's familiar eventually is able to speak with its master, so perhaps - while pretending to be V's familiar - the imp could pretend that V invented a spell allowing his familiar to communicate with others. Even if s/he cannot hold off the dragon, s/he can at least get the children and go hide in the forest. Amidst the various other other elves in hiding from the dragon they might go overlooked (at least for a time). The ancient black dragon has spells as an 11th level sorcerer, so it is possible she may have spells able to locate them despite their attempt to hide, but at least it gives V's mate and children a chance.Of course, the 50 lbs of unliving matter might also include a short written letter from V - perhaps including some item of V's that his/her mate would recognize, thus giving more credence to the letter. On the other hand, if V is ready to consider becoming undead (as I sometimes suspect will be his ultimate path in this story, esp if his family is slain), his skeleton (or skull, for that matter) couldn't possibly weigh more than 50 lbs.
