I see it as a paradoy of the typical adventuring party confronted with a puzzle. Eventually they start throwing out crazy ideas, hoping tht the dungeon master will take the hint and make one of them right, so that the puzzle can be solved Gordian knot style.

Not sure who is supposed to represent the dungeon master eventually and release them from this agony of (reading about) puzzle-solving.

In which I explain a joke and thereby ruin it:

In the Order of the Stick, events which might take a long time but not involve much in the way of action tend to be resolved either with a montage or with a straight cut to the conclusion. For example, traveling between towns often involves leaving the town, encountering a wandering monster from a random encounter table, and then arriving at your destination. Roy was hoping that their new plan of "do some basic stuff and mostly sit around and wait for Girard to notice that they'd triggered the trap, at which point he'd investigate and come talk to them" would result in a direct scene cut to Girard's arrival, rather than a lengthy search scene. Elan's montage is the backup plan that Roy would rather not endure.
