Egyptian sun god, so some desert connection (symbol was a sun-disk, referred to in the comic). The focus of a concerted attempt by Akhenaten to turn Egypt into a monotheistic nation. It proved so unpopular that shortly after Akhenaten's death Aten went from being the only officially worshipped god to being neglected and forgotten.

I suspect it was chosen here for the spelling synchronicity, though.
 

I'm expecting that while it seems like the members of the Order are hitting nothing but dead ends in their investigations, later on bits and pieces of what they've come across will end up giving clues to the location of the Gate.

In Haley's case, who's to say one of those Gatekeepers doesn't buy Aton-brand moisturizer, for those dusty tunnels? ;)
