In a sentence: It's not bad, but it's not great either. It does contain the highly popular Pulp Heroes (more accurately the d20 Modern revision of Pulp Heroes) material originally found in the now defunct Polyhedron magazine. Unfortunately, the original Pulp Heroes article that came out before the release of d20 Modern was better. The d20 Modern version, especially the Advanced Classes, don't balance with other d20 Modern AdCs. See Adamant Entertainment's Thrilling Tales line for better AdC options. The historical weapons provided in d20 Past are more than adequate, at least for my needs. There are a few historical vehicles as well, but certainly not an all-inclusive list. Other types of equipment from different historical periods is sorely lacking. The book also suffers from WotC's "you got D&D peanut butter in my d20 Modern chocolate" syndrome - the D&D rules for nonlethal damage are used in the overland movement section rather than the d20 Modern rules. I did enjoy the Shadow Stalkers campaign setting. I liked the Spiritualist AdC, but I would prefer to use similar AdCs found in RPGObjects Blood and Spooks. While some people think the FX AdCs are redundant from the ones found in d20 Modern, I disagree. The d20 Modern are very New Age-y with their magical tattoos and power crystals. I thought the d20 Past FX AdCs fit the flavor of their respective eras very nicely. d20 Past was a good idea that went wrong. It really should have been a larger hardcover like d20 Future with more material. Either that, or it should have been released as three softcovers: d20 Pirates, d20 Pulp, and d20 Victorian Horror, much like d20 Apocalypse and d20 Cyberscape. I think more people would have been satisfied and their expectations of a work called "d20 Past" would have been met.
