[QUOTE="MacConnell, post: 9780880, member: 6855223"] Finishing their respite, the two boys walk beyond the congested clusters of shanty housing following a , now familiar, path. Having never before considered the matter, the living conditions of the Flats is appalling. Even in such oppressed conditions, many of the residents adhere to a further factionalized system of hierarchy. There are three gangs who claim to control various sections of the marsh, having divided it into, sometimes conflicted, thirds. The three gangs are somewhat like guilds or labor unions fleecing a percentage of the earnings of affiliated residents. Lacking any affiliation can result in outright robbery, which will lead to starvation. Intending to spend the next season, as the one before, collecting closer to the ocean, the normally peaceful time for two young men is interrupted within the first Tenday by the unexpected company of other locals arriving by skiff. Four adolescent, Ansylin boys, perhaps a few cycles younger than Jalakaag and Whiron, pole their way toward the berm and stake their craft so that it cannot drift away. With four, the skiff looked ready to sink under the load. Skiffs are really made for two plus some cargo. The tallest of the boys prods one of the others, who speaks once they are within a few strides. “[COLOR=rgb(147, 101, 184)]You two have been quite successful for some time, wandering wherever you want, but you bear no marks of affiliation.
