Cycle: 503, Day: 1, Season: Rebirth Residents tend to call the first deduction in wages, Guild Dues, but it is really a district maintenance fee and the coins go to the Artisan district for bricks and faux stone. The second mandatory fee goes to the Harbor district, which is where javelineers are trained. Functionally there is not much difference between launching a javelin and using a harpoon. Most residents call the protection fee, the extortion fee, but not where a guard or official can hear it. Buying water and food are not mandatory, but there is not really an option for most everyone, especially with regard to water. Paying for the privilege to vote is also mandatory and if a person does not earn more than three coins in a day, he will quickly die of thirst. After trading their collections from the previous season, which was also the last of the previous Cycle, Jalakaag and Whiron realize that they have accumulated too much extra coin, even with buying twice the amount of water that most purchase. Guards being nothing more than sanctioned extortionists, it is highly likely that the swordsmen guarding the clerk will pass information of such to a trusted javelineer in exchange for a return on the robbery. Before heading out again, the two will need to spend some of the coin, but little is available in the way of merchandise. A carving knife may be the greatest need, but nothing with a blade is available to Flats residents. Better quality clothing is also unavailable, that leaves traps, nets, satchels, waterskins, nets being the most expensive.
