That they cannot be comprehended by the waking mind does not mean they are not feared and hinted at by the subconscious. That they attain self-awareness on their own only furthers their horror. Alternatively, those whose minds wield greater comprehension than ours (the powerful extraplanars) have dreampt, and the Far Realms, while maddening to us, perhaps are not so to them. Gravity. ;) Space is vast, and the probability that a particular combination of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon, and distance from a star wouldn't happen ever is terrifically small. In other words, the planes of existance were created by sentience, nothing else, and the Prime Material is called such because it was first and was not created from nothing. The elemental planes exists as the four elements of the world is created from as conjectured upon by mortals. The world was created, that much is for sure. Its ingredients are Air, Earth, Fire and Water. They come from somewhere, some place where Air, Earth, Fire and Water are dominant. That they are not actually the building blocks of the world does not matter - it is believed that they are, and that is what matters. It is the creative capacity of the collective subconscious that creates. As for the Positive and Negative, well, they are defined by Life and Death. Without Life, there can be no death, and indeed without understanding that you are alive and a living individual, there can be no understanding of what death means and is. Thus while the creation of these energies surely must have occured before sentience, the ability to wield them was not. As for the existance of planes of Positive and Negative, I don't like them. The distinction is created by Life and Positive and Negative energy exists where ever life exists. They have no planes, but are truly around us at all times, on all planes. Cure spells and good clerics do not draw positive energy from a place, they simply amplify the force of the energy already there.
