Origins: Questions and Who's Going?

I just learned that Origins happens at the same place, at the same time, as Gen Con. Is this the case? I thought GenCon was in Illinois.

If it IS the case, does that mean you can bounce between the cons easily? Play over here, over there? Does registering for one get you in both?

I know that Origins is more indie than GenCon, but how else does it differ?

Finally, anyone here going?

Sir, you have learned incorrectly. Gencon is in Indianapolis August 5 through 8, while Origins is in Columbus June 24 through 27.

Origins 2010 - June 23 – 27, 2010, Columbus, Ohio

GenCon 2010 - Aug 5-8, 2010, Indianapolis, Indiana.

I'd say the only way to jump from con to con would be to have a custom built DeLorean with a Flux Capacitor.

Origins is a lot of fun. Lots of games all around and I find that the atmosphere is slightly more relaxed than GenCon.

I've had a great time at both conventions. So I recommend them both.

Origins is a great gaming con and tends to cater to more boardgames and miniatures than RPGs. Which is not to say that RPGs are not well represented, simply that is not the focus of the convention to the same degree that it is at Gencon.

As there is a larger dealer room at Gencon and more product releases at Gencon, I think it is fair to say that Gencon is more about the products and Dealer's Room than Origins is.

Put another way, there are many who say that Gencon is about the products and Origins is about playing the games. I believe that to be an accurate assessment.

I don't have that kind of $$.

Do folks bring their own boardgames, or does the Con supply them?

I don't know about Gen Con. At Origins there is an organization that you can buy a ribbon to have access to. They have a ton of games and people there to play. It was a little less open for new people, the guys there all know each other and not always looking to play or teach new people.

What's the skinny on the best hotel to stay? Connected to the convention center? Amenities such as? How is the attendance compared to Gencon and the layout (easy to get around)? Thanks.
