First Post
I wasn't sure how it was going to go starting on the 4th, but that was the best Wednesday I've ever had at the con. There were some problems but crowds starting to swell a bit near evening and today with luck should be a lot of people. I got to play a card game, a board game, and a session of QAGS met up with some out of towner friends who come ever year and had some fun but none of the people from EN World. I did meet some locals that I did n't know and might be adding more gamers to out local gaming pool.

Their is a board game room that one can buy a ribbon for and just go their to play board games. It is a local organization and a nice place to go when one has free time. I and some friends were shown a game but a nice young woman who was the cliche of a sorority girl. She was dressed in pink, said "like" and "oh my god" way too often and was singing some pop music to herself. She looked like she stepped out of Legally Blonde. Nice person and she kicked our newbie butts but just not the type of person one expects at a gaming convention.

The Role playing session was a rules light game called QAGs. We were a paramilitary organization that fights monsters. We went after killer cockroaches in New York and the DM, another woman, is freaked out by cockroaches. So, she's go into this gastly detail of the bugs and then give herself the creeps. She was one who goes for vivid detail and the cockroach breeding program with humans was so horribly descriptive that I can't post it here for fear of being banned.

That was the light day of the con. Today I go to0 play the new Changeling, Scion, and True20 Freeport. If you are at the con find me or post here and we'll try a meet up. Origins is a really great Convention!!

Hey Crothian,

I was there yesterday as well. Didn't get to play a whole lot, as we didn't actually get onsite until about 6 PM and then I spent a lot of time getting all my events lined out (next time, prereg on time...) I was happy though as I got almost all of the events I wanted and then some.

I'll be there all event, going to Hackmaster, a couple of seminars (Russian Hand-to-Hand and Patton: Genius at War), and D20 Modern this evening.

Thursday was another great day. I trie4d out the new Changleing and Scion games. And then was able to play in a True20 Freeport game. At the Whitewolf games I got free sets of d20 and they were giving out coupons for their books in the dealer room. It was a long day but great fun. The dealer's room is nice and spaced out so it doesn't feel crowded or get congested around the popular booths. I went deal hunting and managed to get 9 books I was looking for and spent only 50$.

Today is a bit more relaxed and with plenty of friends local and not about I hope to spend more time with them and get some good games in.

For those who have done both Origins and Gen Con Indy, I have a few questions, if you don't mind taking a few minutes to answer them:

How does Origins compare to Gen Con Indy?

What do you like more about Origins than Gen Con?

What do you like more about Gen Con than Origins?

What do you dislike about Origins when compared to Gen Con?

What do you dislike about Gen Con when compared to Origins?

Why would you recommend someone go to Origins over Gen Con Indy, or would you?

Why would you recommend someone go to Gen Con Indy over Origins, or would you?

I'm just trying to find out more about Origins, and come up with some points to compare it against something I'm already familiar with, that being Gen Con Indy. Thanks in advance for your time.

With Regards,
Flynn

It's a very solid large gaming convention, but it is a fraction of the extravaganza GC is these days. You don't go to Origins to just soak in the sights and buy a few things - you go to play games.

It is easier to get around the venue. There are quite a few historical games. It is easy to get a lot of enjoyable gaming in.

Really, there is no comparison to the BAM value of GC. GC is the premiere shows for a lot of companies and you are going to get a lot of first looks. The painting classes and competitions at GC blow Origins away.

It's like going to the Royal Gorge right after you have been to the Grand Canyon.

If you are choosing just one convention to go to, and these are your choices, you have to do GC. GC is truly a separate "experience" - Origins is just a solid large gaming convention. The only reason to choose Origins is if a certain game you play has their world/American championship at Origins.

Origins is my gaming con. I find it much easier to get into games and find things that I want to play. I rarely have problems using generics to get into games as well. It is smaller then Gen Con yet big enough to attract many publishers and people I want to see.

Gen Con I goto meet the people as everyone seems to go there. It is huge.

At Origins--Looking for a Game

I'm here on business, so I haven't had a chance to get any real gaming in. I'm free this evening, though, around 10:00 or so, so if anyone is putting a game together I'd love to meet up.

Darn it, if I would have seen this post before I came home I would have set something up. Sorry, but I was at the convention all day and I never check the boards from there. If you have time next year and can give me a day or two notice (more would be better but I know that can be tough) I'd be more then happy to set something up.

Just got back from Origins. It ROCKED as usual.

I love both GenCon and Origins. Hard for me to choose one over the other.

I like Origins because it's less intense than GenCon. Easier to find/hook up with your friends. Lots of quiet areas/corners where you can get a pick up game going. Sort of laid back. Like someone said you go there to game.

And I like GenCon because it's just the opposite. Intense. Stuff going on everywhere. You never know what to expect.

I'd hate to see either one change and I look forward to both shows each summer.

Oh, well, maybe next year. I'm always at the shows on business and usually don't know if or when I'll have any free time. (This extends into the evenings; a lot of business takes place over dinners or at industry events.) But I can might be able to come up with more than two hours' warning next year. . . .

I did end up in a Savage Worlds game. Had half my face burned off by the vengeful ghost of a crazy arsonist college student. Good times.
