Bresk (cont.) That night, back at The Golden Griffon, the party was approached by a fellow named Hrumbrand, a troubadour for the court. He leaned over the party as they dined and whispered, "You must leave! You are in danger!” Hrumbrand avoided questions, saying that he cannot be seen with them, but that people will try to kill them. When pressed he explained that the king is insane, and that he has sworn out an arrest warrant for the heroes, which amounts to an order of execution in these times. Their only chance of escape was to flee north to the lands of Duke Gallo — Gallo can help them, he is not really a traitor, it is urgent, and if they left that night, Hrumbrand said, he would have someone waiting at the north gate to let them out. It seemed obvious to the party that Hrumbrand was acting strangely, and Reogar trailed him back to the castle of Steppengard, where he immediately turned himself in to the guard as a traitor and was imprisoned. Unsure what to do, but unwilling to leave Bresk yet, the heroes made careful plans to defend their rooms in the inn and settled in for a stressful night. Unfortunately, Hrumbrand's words were prophetic, as a contingent of the Talon arrived at the inn around midnight, intent on killing or arresting the heroes. Unwilling to go quietly, the party battled bravely, but the addition of an assassin and the sheer numbers of soldiers overwhelmed them and they were (with the exception of Fern, who fled along the rooftops) arrested. There was no sign of Balan, but it was assumed that he was killed in the fighting. The arrested heroes find themselves in the dungeon of Castle Bresk accompanied only by Jinis, the proxy of Gallo. Although he seems a bit worse for the wear, he encourages them to attempt an escape. Alain was subjected to some torture at the hands of Serrimus and Torrax, but they ask him no questions. Shortly, Fern arrives, having scurried through the sewers in rat form and finds the rest of the party mid-escape, having concocted a daring plan involving deception and trickery. The party battles through the dungeon guards and escapes through the sewers, following Fern's path back to safety. Eventually, the heroes emerge outside the walls of Bresk and, mysteriously discovering some unattended horses, travel north at the encouragement of Jinis to the lands of Gallo.
