Do it right now, in fact - August is a BIG tourist month here. Hotel prices here average at about $200 a night in NYC. Also, try to avoid staying near the airports (Kennedy or LaGuardia) - prices are higher there. It's too bad you aren't coming sooner - the Brooklyn Museum of Art has a Star Wars exhibit up now with all kinds of costumes and stuff from the movies, including C3P0 and R2D2.
