Who's been here?

I'm going for the first time, leaving tomorrow. I'm posting this hoping I can get some advice on anything special that I just shouldn't miss, as well as some advice on what to do around there.

Thanks for any help!

I've been there. The best advice I can give is do not drink a dozen Long Island Ice Teas after the museum closes.

In addition to that, stay in the museum. The town is pretty boring. Make sure you eat dinner before 8, the closes down real quick.

Great museum, boring town.

I grew up about 20 miles from Cooperstown in Oneonta, the closet thing to a town in the area. Cooperstown rather jealously guards its quaint, old-fashioned 19th century village feel (IIRC McDonalds had to build outside the area). It's a beautiful place to walk around, but besides the Hall there's not much going on there. James Fenemore Cooper House is OK, but I was bored there.

Oneonta is not far away and is a small college town (two colleges, population doubles when shool is in session), so if you're into bar hopping, there's much more going on there. Great area for hiking, though. Otherwise, the closest thing to a city is Binghamton or Albany, about an hour and a half and two hours away, at either end of Interstate 88 respectively.

Depending upon your tastes, there may be something you like in the area, but it's mostly sleepy dairy country.

I have to agree with the previous posters about Cooperstown being a rather slow visit other than the museum. However, when it comes to the museum, if you have the time and are a big baseball fan, I'd take the time to see it over two days, rather than cram it into one as I did the only time I've been there
