Be advised: this post might be big but it's not clever. It is about something I just remembered I used to do, to maximise the fun I had with one of my favourite computer games, Civilisation II. Lo, I am so sad or so lame--take your pick--that the memory makes me laugh still. And I'm going to share it. After playing Civilisation and CivII for a few years, I was regularly playing Emperor level games against seven other civilisations. I would choose to customise the game world, making it as large and random as possible, without increasing resources or anything like that. But the part I really enjoyed was making up the name of my tribe and its leader, its titles of office, city names and so forth. After several surreal variations, I called my tribe, "The Hippies." The leader of the Hippies was called, "Man." I knew the Hippies had a future when I started a new game and the dialogue box opened with the words: "Man, you have risen to become leader of the Hippies." Settlement naming was crucially important, as was the subsequent placement of wonders. The Hanging Gardens of Weed, Great Wall of Flower Power, Pyramids of Munchies, Darwin's Voyage in Head Space... the Hippies achieved them all and more. Inevitably, the tribe encountered prejudice. Foreign envoys would often snarl, "We have no need of your useless, Hippie maps." Hippie maps were as good as anyone's, let me tell you. I can't remember all the dialogue permutations that came up but with titles like 'That Bloke', 'Dude' and 'Yo', even being wiped off the planet and harshly judged for my shortcomings was a moment to savour. Help me. Let me slide slide into oblivion.
