(OT) Discworld: system for setting?

redwing

First Post
I was wanting to run a Discworld Campaign (Terry Pratchett) and was wanting to know what system I should use. I was thinking something fast and flexible. But that's hard to find. Something that covers every possibility with the simplest of resolution mechanics. I think d20 is just to slow and clunky for the job. What do you think?

GURPS, as there's already 2 books already published FOR the Discworld setting.

GURPS: Discworld, and GURPS: Discworld Also.

GURPS Discworld comes with the GURPS Lite rules (in the back of the book). GURPS Lite is a trimmed down version of the regular GURPS system, and you can read about it -- and download it for free -- here: http://www.sjgames.com/gurps/lite/. If you like GURPS Lite, I'd definitely check out the Discworld hardcover, as it's pretty nicely done.

I will second (err.. third) the GURPS DW books. If for no other reasons than for Kidby's illustrations. But there is the added bonus that Pratchett helped to write them! At least, he's given co-author credit on the covers.

I own the first supplement and it is REALLY well-done. A lot of thought went into everything from GM-ing DEATH to Headology skill.

Yup. you could do worse than the GURPS discworld books. And considering that this is primarily a D&D/ d20 site, and you've got a handful of recommendations for a GURPS book, that says something...

It is one of the better novel-to-game translations out there, I think. It does a fantastic job of capturing the tone of the Discworld books, but keeping in mind that this is a RPG, not a novel, and making sure it works as a game.

Plus, Paul Kidby's artwork is not to be believed. Here's a link to his discworld site. A lot of the stuff he's posted online is from the game.

Sorry to be a naysayer, but think really carefully about what you're doing. I'm not sure I could even get close to the feel of the Discworld in a game, and I didn't like the GURPS treatment at all. Lots of little things irritated me, mostly about how they treated the witches.

Pratchett's characters are a little too complex to be done in the D20 system, I think, and whilst I didn't like the GURPS discworld book rule-wise, I don't know any other versions. So go for it, I would always say go for it, but good luck - I think you'll need it.

I guess I'm sorta recommending the GURPS book, but only because:

* I don't know of any other RPG treatment of the subject

and

* GURPS sourcebook (and there seems to be at least one for everything) are very, very good general resources for any RPG. The setting info within them is compiled with an eye to gaming, and doesn't really have to be limited to just the actual GURPS mechanics.
