[OT - gaming affecting RL] Does this ever happen to you?

Uggg. Shadowrun is really really bad for being accidently overheard in public. Reaaaaly bad. Walking down the street talking about weapon loadout and customization, data theft, breaking and entry, shootouts, etc tends to be a Bad Thing (TM). So's Cyberpunk.

Almost as bad is Whitewolf games, or at least mage/werewolf/vampire. Vampire can be really disturbing to talk about even in private at times, much less in public (Ok, I was thirstly, it had been a long time since my sire allowed me out to eat, so I snagged the nearest hooker and drank her blood... things like that can creep me out.).

In a phone conversation, I was about to say to one of my players: "Oh yeah, rememebr those three guys you killed? Well, it tirns out they were part of the cult, so don't worry about it."

Then I remembered that I was at work. We don't even have cubicles at work, we have these 'pods' with 4 people in them.

Fortunately, I caught myself...

My jaw just about hit the floor once at a comment my stepmother made. She was baking cookies or something like that and I was about to snack on one when she told me not to since they were for her D&D group. I just about choked. It turned out that it was a church thing called "Dessert and Devotions", but I obviously thought it meant something else....

Shadowrun again: We were at a gaming convention in my hometown in Switzerland, and during a break we went into a pizza hut, discussing the run. Incidentally, the run had led the seattle-based group to Switzerland in 2055. Since runners, and in particular mages, had a hard time there, we discussed a trip with our regular campaign to the same country, when a player loudly spoke "I'll never set foot into Switzerland in my life!" People from the next tables kept looking funny at us for the rest of the meal...

Uh oh shadowrun

Germany: Friends of mine were at a Shadowrun LARP... Without permits from the police. Well ... Their Mr. Johnson was playing a drug freak who kept on injecting himself some sugarwater all the time... 10 minutes after the players arrived, the police was there... weapons drawn as they saw all those guys with sunglasses and strange things in their pockets :)

They had scarcely explained the police that it's a game when one of the police guys took a look in their car in front of the pub and saw that piece of "explosives" with electronics attached to it and something that looked exactly like a heavy machine gun... Bomb Squad :)

They had a long long night at the police station :)

Darklone,

Wow! That's a good one!

I had forgotten about Shadowrun. I remember a time when I was walking through a mall with two of my friends and one of them commented on how easy it would be to rob one of the banks right in front of a security guard. Fortunately, the guard had a sense of humor.

Well at least you didnt start to rattle off his ability scores.

Well, this isnt exactly the same, but I was doing an oral report in my Medieval Thought class on William the Conq. and I mentioned that he was a high level Duke, when I MEANT to say a powerful Duke. I really thought noone noticed until someone in the back yelled out the quote from the movie Airheads, "I played D&D too!" in the voice and everything.

I should have been mortified, but it turns out alot of the class was into, or still was into, gaming (you should expect that in a class of this sort, I guess).

Ahh, shadowrun. Too many instances occure with me talking about it with a friend in class, and someone else overhears "Yeah, I should be fine because I have a heavy pistol under my jacket a a machine gun in my car" Man, you get some strange reactions.

We had a fun one a few years back...

So it's a week of Roleplaying during the summer (don't you love it :)) RPed every day from noon to midnight roughly. We were staying in the French countryside and one afternoon we decide to not be geeks and go down to the local lake for a dip.

There we are, sitting on our towels, discussing the campaign (you can only stop being a geek for so long ;)) Around us there were quite a few groups of locals, obviously not tourists (the lake wasn't that tempting BTW ;)) and one of the player says, really loud : "it's really boring though, we keep on meeting stinking peasants..." (referring to the fact that the group was going through village upon village in the campaign.) Very hard stares from groups nearby. Oblivious to the fact, as a GM, I start defending my campaign :"You gotta understand though, it may sound stinking to us, but it's a life for them..."

We left soon afterwards on the recommendation of the two other players who had been noticing even more hard stares...

I occasionally make comments like:

"Man that guy sure failed his Fortitude save!" when I see some outrageous thing on TV or in real life that would correspond to the D&D save. My wife always looks at me like I am a wierdo though....
