[OT] Gaming Consoles: Which one?

Eye Tyrant

First Post
Okay, so I just did my taxes today and found that I will be receiving more then twice as much as I expected in my return... Good news indeed!

Now, the question is which gaming system do I get? My boys and I have the "old school" Playstation and are wanting an upgrade. I always said that I would wait until the Xbox and Gamecube came out before upgrading. Well they are here now, and I have the cash... But which one?

My buddy swears by the Cube, but also admits that he is a sucker for the "cartoony" graphics and Mario Bros.

I tend to think that the Xbox would be the way to go for various reasons.

And then there is the PS2.

What am I to do!!??

Please post your thoughts on each so that I might make an informed decision...

The DVD capabilities aren't a factor as I already own a nice DVD player....

It depends Nintendo has always had 'better' technology
but it didn't mean s:)it because the games sucked
(Most Nintendo fans still rave about the innovation and superior gaming of Mario 64! - which is all true but hey)

So its a choice between XBox and PS2

PS2 is a known quantity with a good game selection (lots of crap but becuase of the sheer number you can always find something to entertain)

XBox is (from what I've heard) going to be good, does have Micro$oft behind it etc etc - but we don't know anything for sure

So Devil you do or Devil you don't

Actually my advice would be to upgrade your computer system and stick with that

Without going into a lot of detail I recommend the PS2 for the sole reason that it has the most and best games hands down. It's only going to get better for it as well.

I like the Gamecube but it isn't on the same level as the PS2 yet. It probably won't be for at least a year or so.

The Xbox is okay but frankly it's game selection sucks. Halo is the only game I play on a regular basis and with the other Xbox games I just rented them. The one thing I like about the Xbox over both the PS2 and the GC is the hard drive. I imagine with in a year though both the GC and the PS2 with have a hard drive as well.

PS2 is the one to get. :)

Yeah, I'm trying to get away from playing games on my computer though, for various reasons. That's why I was thinking Xbox... Just looking for opinions though right now.

Thanks for the info! And keep it coming.

It all about what you want to play, now I have an XBox so I may be a bit biased, but here goes.

GameCube
Pros-
Cheap
Portable
Innovative games such as Pikmin and Super Smash Bros Melee
Cons-
Not upgradable
Few ouside developers.

PS2
Pros-
Proven Technology
Kazillion Games
Final Fantasy & Metal Gear Solid
Cons-
Kazillion Bad Games
Graphics not quite as good as other systems

Xbox
Pros-
Hardrive
Mind bending graphics
Halo, Project Gotham, Amped, NFL Fever and a bunch of other great games
Easy code means more developers making games.
Broadband internet (eventually)
Did I mention Halo
Cons-
Most expensive
Really really heavy
currently limited game library.
Supporting the evil empire of Mirco$oft (not that I have a problem with that)

In Summary-
GameCube is for younger and more casual gamers.
Xbox is for hardcore L337 gamers who take their video games seriously.
PS2 is a middle of the road system for the whole family.

Hm.

Well, I'm definitely against the X-box. Poor title selection, crappy controllers, huge size of the console, and I've seen LOTS of crashed x-boxes in stores. Doesn't mean that all of them crash, but I've seen lots of them in stores. And even though you aren't interested in the DVD bit, you have to pay extra to get dvd playing, and there's a rather large list of incompatible dvds. The only reason that I'd get an X-box is to play Halo.

PS2 is very nice, as it's backwards compatible with existing PS games, has lots of titles, and decent graphics. This is probably my first choice. However, it IS a little dated, with the other 2 consoles being newly released.

I also like the Gamecube, but I'm not too fond of the game selection. Who knows? It might change a bit with the gamecube. Maybe nintendo will draw more uh, well, adult-type players with it, and get some more graphic games. I've seen Rebel Assault (is that the title? can't remember for sure.. it's the star wars game) and it looks amazing.

So, my vote would be for the PS2 or GC.
