What are we waiting for? Why don't we send some people to Mars? I should have majored in something that could get me to mars....

tleilaxu, I'll tell you a secret - I had a friend who used to work for the army. He told me that the gov't managed to build and successfully send a manned ship to mars. We actually made contact with the indigenous Martians!

However, they were particularly interested in this super-plant with scarlet-orange fronds and a dark brown stalk, called nimmen. We had been seeing seas of the stuff in long-range pictures, but had not known what it was.

Upon taking samples of the stuff, they discovered miraculous properties to human biology - accelerated healing rate, boosting of the immune system, and an energy boost that made ginseng look like a placebo.

When asked about this wonder-plant, they found that the Martians had no use for it whatsoever, because it did nothing for their physiology. It was in fact a plant that they burned off regularly rather than harvested.

When the governemtn astronauts asked if they could take some specimens of this wonder-plant home with them, The martians said yes, but looked at them as if they were daft.

After all, Mars weeds nimmen.

Well (to get this thread on-topic), in Transhuman Space, the joint US-Russion Horus Mars mission ends in disaster in 2025, but the Chinese Chaosheng mission safely lands in 2026.

And that's why, in 2100, Mars is also called "Rust China"...

When does the first manned Mars mission land in other SF RPG universes? And how?

There won't be any manned missions to Mars for some time for the same reason there are no more manned missions to the Moon. Actually, for the same reason there are no more human pinsetters in the bowling alleys. They've been replaced by technology.

Really, what can a (very expensive to transport) astronaut really tell us about Mars that a dozen (cheap to transport) robots couldn't? We'll get there eventually. We'll colonize eventually. Just don't hold your breath.

I'm not so sure. The Chinese seem intent on having a manned space flight project as a matter of prestige.

And the moment they announce that they are planning a manned mission to Mars, you can bet the USA will do the same. Expense will not matter. After all, we all know that the best rocket fuel there is is distilled American ego... :D
