That applies to the GSM network used in Europe, and is something required by EU law. It isn't required anywhere else, AFAIK.

Oh. That sucks.

I think that if I found myself dying in the snow and with a cellphone, and unable to use it because my prepaid is empty, the bitter irony would drive me insane before I die from cold.

Well, being able to make a call may not be worth much if it turns out nobody can get to you anyway. At least you'll have someone to chat to while you die.

This happened to an NZ climber on Everest a few years back. He was trapped in a blizzard, and he knew there wasn't any hope of surviving. He called his wife on his mobile to say goodbye.

"Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer tells this story along with the seven other climbers who died.

"Into the Wild" is worth reading also.
