Mysterious Black viscous water with spiderwebs in it imperils fishermem near Waterdeep.

One of the reasons my campaigns edge towards being grimmer than your typical fantasy campaign is that I use RW events as plot seeds. This is a good example of using what I read in the news as a plot device.

You ought to read up on the various types of algae-related tides; red tides, brown tides, purple tides, and so on. I worked them all into my undersea campaign. Also, the various terrain types can blend well with aquatic campaign - sea grasslands, sea star fields, urchin barrens, sargassum swamps, and so on.

The Discovery Channel makes for a great resource, when designing adventures.
