Oh man, Coyote Ugly. Wow, that brings back memories. There are most definitely zero topless women at Coyote Ugly. I'm quite sure the bar and the movie share nothing more than a name. From what I recall, that place was a real dump with few, if any, redeeming qualities. My friend Squirrel and I used to use it as a codeword for any of the lame social options our other friends would come up with. I literally fell out of my chair when I first saw an ad for the movie. The one thing I remember was that it was a good place to take undergrads from my frat who worked summer term interns down on Wall Street or elsewhere in the city, since they never carded. My favorite bar was a little hole in the wall on St. Marks called Grassroots. They had the Clash, Buzzcocks, Talking Heads, and a bunch of other cool bands on the jukebox, plus the beer was cheap, the bartender had a golden retriever, and it there was almost always an open table. There's this entire subculture of C&W bars with scantily clad bartenders. H&H was one. Village Idiot was another. I can't even remember if Coyote Ugly was supposed to be the same way or if it just stunk. Weird thing about NY is that in a lot places in the city, you can't walk 10 feet without finding a bar and they stay open until 5 AM. There's tons of different trends and different bar "classes" I guess you could call them. It's weird being in Boston with public transportation that stops at 12:30 and bars that close at 1. Then again, I'm not exactly the bar going type any more. I knew I had made it in NYC when my friends and I started going to bars that looked like abandoned storefronts from the outside. If you've seen Swingers, you know what I'm talking about.
