Oooo question This is sort of auspicious. Honestly I'm pretty curious about sleeping and productiveness. Its become a bit of a mini-obsession for me. If its not too much of an imposition I'd be curious about what you think of the following statements (this is all generally stuff I've culled from books and articles) 1. The body's sleep cycle is governed my some kind of hormone. 2. The hormone (or changes in hormone levels or different combinations of hormones) is most present the hour before you get up (to make sure you get a full nights sleep) and most lacking the hour before you go to sleep (to make sure you stay awake until its time to go to sleep. This is why its good not to sleep in on the weekends you re-adjust your body clock and then you can't go to bed early on Sunday nights. 3. You also get a mini-increase in the afternoon (around 1ish?) which causes people to want to take a nap. I remember hearing a study about napping and increased productivey. (I also find I'm tired around 5:30 - 6:30 right but that's probably a me thing) 4. the idea time for a nap is about 20 minutes. (AKA Disco napping) 5 Sleep is broken up into R.E.M. cycles (also called dreaming). Everybody puts in 2 R.E.M. cycles during the night, most people R.E.M for about an hour and a half. The problem with sleeping less than 7 or more than 8:30 hours is that the R.E.M. cycle doesn't complete fully. This pounds you mentally. 6. You need less sleep as you grow older. (does your REM cycle shorten? is it a hormonal thing) Even more so than usual I'm unsure of my facts. Its hard to et good info on the topic. How did you become a sleep schedualer anyway? Do you have a medical background? Bonus question: What do you think sleep does? (I:ve heard everything from cooling down your brain temperature to processing the day's memories for correct archiving into long term memory to helping deal with emotional stressors -- and we all know what Lovecraft thought...) Can you recommend any books?
