Can Funny Cide do it again?

Or do you like some else...

Despite 12-1 odds, Funny Cide had the last laugh in Louisville after outrunning Bobby Frankel-trained entries Empire Maker and Peace Rules down the stretch. “A lot of times when a long shot wins the Derby he gets overlooked in the Preakness,” says NBC handicapper Mike Battaglia. “But I still think Funny Cide's the one to beat, no matter what Frankel throws at him.” Frankel could run Peace Rules or the speedy Midas Eyes at the front-runner-friendly Pimlico Race Course. Fellow pacesetter Indian Express is Bob Baffert's best bet for a fifth Preakness win in seven years.

10 lengths!!! this is the equivalent of critting all his last 1/2 mile.

amazing.

it has been a good long time since we had a triple crown winner if my memory serves. having a gelding do it would be exceptionally rare. (i don't think a gelding has ever done it)

A gelding has never won. Last Triple Crown winner was Affirmed in 1978; Seattle Slew and Secretariet in '77 and '73.

Maybe it'll happen. There have been a lot of near misses, of course. At least this time there seems to be no suspicion of cheating.

This year ties the longest drought in history without a triple crown winner. 25 years...

And no, a Gelding has never won.

I don't want to disparage Funny Cide's chances, but he did run against a pack of dogs today mostly...well, great horses really, just not great horses in his league.

Only one horse in the field had the legs and the pedigree to be a threat to him, and that's Peace Rules.

But you have to hand it to Santos, he keeps falling in behind Peace Rules and letting him set a nice pace, then outracing him for the finish.

He may have the legs to take it...we'll have to wait and see. You can bet good money it will be a much more challenging race at the Belmont though.
