I gotta disagree with you Doc. Just because an Air Force officer doesn't have perfect vision and isn't a pilot, does not mean their options are limited. I am a Communications Officer and a member of a career field bigger than that of fighter pilots. Are the wide variety of jobs out there as sexy as being a pilot? No. Is there opportunity for advancement? Of course. Any officer (regardless of branch) has opportunity to climb the ladder and be in command at various levels. I will never be a commander of a flying unit, but I could still conceivably be the commander of an Air Base Wing. Full-bird Colonel. And just because you're a pilot doesn't mean its all glory. Somebody has to fly the big, fat, slow C-5 cargo jet. About as unsexy as they come. Or the C-9, basically a flying ambulance. Or the C-21, essentially a corporate Lear jet. Would I like to fly an F-16? Sure. But my odds of being shot down over hostile territory as a Comm officer are very remote. :) My eyesight was not perfect when I came in, but I am still up for promotion to Major in the not too distant future. Doc, your point about the missileers is well taken. That job strikes me as VERY boring and tedious, but has nothting to do with eyesight. Some may have 20/20. Sexy? No. Important? Heck yeah! To anyone reading this considering a military career, either enlisted or officer, the sheer variety of jobs available is astounding. Odds are, whatever you like to do, there is a career field to match it. Like dealing with people? Public Affairs. Like weather? Meteorology. Like radios/computers/satellites? Communcations. Want to be a doctor or nurse? Do like Derian and have Uncle Sam pay for your medical training. There is much more to the military than simply putting lead on target (although that is the primary mission). Heck, I worked as a Visual Information troop for a while. TV and still cameras, video editing, and print layout. Had a blast. Stuff I worked on was broadcast on local and network channels around the country. Anyway, any of the services has opportunity. And with this, I'll try to stop hijacking this thread.
