[OT] Tech Question

Hey Tech Guys,

I have a question for ya'll. Last night I was playing WC3 and my computer deep froze. I reset my comp and it won't reboot. I try again... nothing. I realize the monitor is not turning on so I pull out my video card (GeForce 2 MX) and put in an old one. Viola! my computer starts.

My question is, how often do video cards just burn out?!?!?! If you can't tell I'm really peeved that my card just died on me.

Oh well, thanks for your answers.

:):):):) happens.

It might be unstable powerlines, bad motherboard feeding the ports with to much juice, ESD, unidentified component eating viruses... ahemm... ;)

Strangely, I've never burnt out a video card or heard of it happening to someone I know (and I've accidently pulled a video card from a running system). I've heard about it online though... but always thought it was kind of an urban myth ;)

Someone in this thread mentioned heat. Did you shut down the computer for a while before replacing the video card? If you did not, put it back and see if it works.

If it does, then you have a heat problem with the card. Make sure that the chip fan on the card has room (you may need to move some olther cards into different slots to give the video card some breathing room).

Or it could just be dead. Is it under warrantee? If so, bring it back ASAP.

I just burnt out my Geforce2 32MB card which came with my Dell in summer of 2000. Apparently the fan broke because I kept my moniter @ 100% brightness / contrast for days on end before restarting. My friend said I was lucky I didn't overheat the card so much that my MoBo didn't break either.

Oh well ... bought a Geforce3 Ti 64MB for $85 which will give me a much better frame rate and x2 memory. (Would've bought something even better, but it's only an 800mhz and I couldn't take advantage of more CPU power)

Have yopu tried putting the GeForce 2 back in the PC. I have encountered some seating issues with some of the GeForce 2's out there. Had to pop them in and out of the mobo a few times before I got it just right.

Also Omakage is right...it may have just overheated.

Later!

Well, thanks all for your imput.

I did let it cool overnight before I tried to use it again. I have the feeling that it just burned itself out. It had other problems with it (Like the TV-Out port was DOA). Oh well, I got a new GeForce 2 with double the memory for the same price I bought the original card for so I'm not to mad.

Thanks again
