[OT] Warhammer 40k Questions

Dust

First Post
I'm thinking about starting up an army for 40k, but having never played before (demos and short explanatory games aside) I'm looking for a little adivice. What's a good place to begin? Hell, how do you go about beginning to collect an army? What are things you wished you had known or thought about before beginning yourself? Basically, I'm looking for anything y'all who play think might be helpful or worthwhile for me to know.

The WH40k equivalent of ENWorld can be found at www.dakkadakka.com (including great forums).

As Leopold bellowed, Chaos is probably a good race to start; they're quite powerful and reasonably forgiving wrt. tactical mistakes (I play Dark Eldar now, which are neither :)), if you feel their style suits you. They have some incredibly cool new models too. (Daemon Prince = Balor. Period.)

Best way to go about it is get a small, functional army (1 HQ, 2 Troops, maybe an elite or heavy support unit, 300-500 points) and have some skirmishes, so you know what you like, and what works well. Then plan out how you want your army to develop up front, and add to it squad by squad.

Hope that helps...

I'd go with a battle force as maudlin said for any army that has them It cost around 90 bucks Us. Most of them are about 433 points without extras. If theres one of there stores around i'd go there they are very helpful. Good Luck.

i'd go space maarines for a starting army they're pretty tough and fairly easy to paint up. they're the standard army, and you'll get lots of advice.

but i've always had a soft spot for the imperium...

Go to a local shop and see if you can play a game using an army. Here is my take on the different armies:

SM and CSM: Good shooting, Armor, Close combat, everything. The best all around army IMO.
* Started a CSM army recently...still developing. *

Tyranids: Close combat and big bugs. You won't win any shooting battles, use cover, get close, provide lots of scary models to draw fire and hope to outlast them!
* I play bugs...win more than I lose. *

Tau - not as good a shot as SM...but have great guns. BAD in close combat.

Orks - Another close combat army or army that kills with shooting through mass fire power.

Necrons - robots, good guns, keep getting up after you shot them.

Eldar - fast, mobile, good units for clsoe combat, some good units for shooting.

Imperial Guard - grunts, same shooting as Tau but regular troops weapons stink. Guard shine with vehicles and ordance (BIG BOOm) weapons!

I'm sure I forgot someone...will have to look at my books later tonight when I can respond some more. If you want send me an email.

My advice is to go to a local store and ask if you can look at the codexes. Find an army you would like to play and see if you could test one out at the store...some do this.

Also remember that 4th ed may come out in a year-year and a half and that new Trial Assault Rules are out in the new Chapter Approved 2003.

The game is a blast, just remember that it is a simulation and does not depict real combat. :D Feel free to ask me anything, I've been playing for over a year now. Have decent sized Tyranid and Chaos SM armies. Usually play against SM, CSM, and Necron foes...sometimes against Tau, Orks, and other 'Nids.
