Hi everyone,

I've been having this problem for a long time. I payed $35.00 to Microsoft to help me resolve the issue but they have been utterly useless so far. The problem is this: Everytime I try to download a file (any file, the source is irrelevant) it goes to the pop-up box like it should, but then it stops and gives me an error message:

"Internet Explorer was not able to open this site."

Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure its an IE6.0 problem since I have switched ISPs very recently and still have the same problem.

Thanks for any input!

P.S. Please remember that I can't download any service packs or patches.

Forget to mention I use Win XP Home. Heh heh, sorry about that:D

Try to download the files with Getright.

Try to set a proxy-server (anyone will do) on the internet options in Internet Explorer.

Can you send and recieve files over other ports than HTTP (port 80)? Like over ICQ or IRC?

Try to save the code below as an HTML file, open it in your browser, right click on the link and choose save-as. Does it work? (You can replace the file with anyone on your hard drive)
Code:
[color=#FFFFFF]{a href="C:\WINNT\System\calc.exe"}test{/a}[/color]
Replace the { with < and } with >

Can you save the current webpage (File -> Save As) in IE?

I realise this isn't the answer you are looking for and I will try and keep my advocacy to a minimum, but if nothing else solves your problem, you could go to www.mozilla.org and download one of their browsers.

If nothing else, you can diagnose whether it is a IE problem or a Windows problem/network problem. If Mozilla (or Phoenix if you want a smaller download for just a browser) has the same problems, you can start diagnosing your network. If not, then it is probably a browser problem.

Thanks a lot you guys!

After months of trying, I finally found a solution in an MS Newsgroup.

I cleared all my cookies, history, and temporary internet files (including the offline ones). Also, I defraged my hard drive.

Downloads are working like a charm now.

Thanks again!

As much as I use MS products, it's things like that this that really get me: .two of the solutions (clear the cookies and defrag) have nothing to do with the problem.

The other two solutions would seem to indicate some kind of cache problem - possibly you tried to download something that IE really couldn't open the site, and from there IE got stuck.

It's possible that there was a problem with disk space in general, or allocation for IE, but I don't see how that would prevent you from downloading things.

Oh well...such is life when dealing with Microsoft.
