Re: Re: Re: Re: Phil Collins Syndrome I prefaced my post with this statement "The rest of this post is a strongly held opinion that fans of Dave Matthews probably don't want to read." I thought that was pretty clear. I stated right off the bat that it was an OPINION. I am well aware that my personal history (as detailed in the post) may have colored my perception of their music. It is also my opinion that many current drummers "from death metal to jazz" and everywhere in between are also uninspired. I haven't been impressed by drum work but once or twice in a LONG time. Again, this is an opinion, but being the best of what's out there right now is like being the best-looking guy in the leper colony. As for the guitar thing, it is also my opinion that rock (and pseudo-rock) bands should have a LEAD GUITAR. I love rhythm guitar. But I think it's natural place is BEHIND the lead. And, again, he may be very good by current standards, but put him next to a mediocre guitarist from the heydey of rock (which is apparently regarded as ancient history) and he doesn't impress. Heck, put him next to a bunch of local amateurs I know and he doesn't impress. But again, this could be an artifact of my opinion. I agree with you that musical tastes are subjective. Furthermore, I never said they sucked. In my personal opinion, they DO suck. But I never said that in the last post, and I wouldn't make a blanket statement like that without making it clear (as I did here) that it was my opinion. I also agree that there's something redeeming in the fact that they play their own instruments. And they have balls for letting that guy sing. But I don't think that makes them good people. And driving a Subaru doesn't mean he's a humble man. It means he has poor taste in vehicles. And that he has even less imagination for what to do with his money than he does for writing songs. But we're getting back into my opinions there. It's also my opinion that I could have saved a lot of time by saying "this is my opinion" once at the beginning of the post and having it apply globally, but I guess that doesn't work anymore.
