Other Paladin Mounts...

For the life of me, I can't find a guideline on suitable Paladin mounts. My wife's paladin wants a Riding Hare (from In the Saddle, which is unfortunately not 3.5, but shouldn't be hard to convert), but wants a template added on to give him some more "meat". The DMG says the mount's CR should be 3 less than the character level, and 4 less if it flies. Should those same rules be applied for a paladin mount?

Thanks
Chris

3.5 DMG has specific creatures. However, by looking at their CRs, they are almost all 3 or 4 less than the level of the Paladin... (Monstrous Spider is 4 less, likely because of the climb movement)

So she could have a.... Half-Celestial Riding Hare of Legend* and it'd only be a CR of 5 (Hare is 1, half-celestial is 2 with the wings, monster of legend is 2). So her Paladin could gain it at 9th level or higher, correct?
