Ott Lites - a review

Legend
Ott lites make a high end multi-spectrum hobby light. Ott lite makes a lot claims about their lighting fixtures - you can see the claims on their site. Now I have resisted buying one of these lights for years - not necessarily because of the price - they are not cheap. No, I resisted because I thought I could do better or at least as well with my own lamps and full spectrum (daylight) bulbs.

This week their is a sale on Ottlites at Michael's Craft stores. I went ahead and splurged.

I have to say - I was wrong. Ottlites give the sharpest, clearest indoor light I have ever seen. I cannot wait to paint details under the light, and I think the lamps are worth the money. You can get these lamps for cheaper online than Michael's by the way. I could have saved about $5 on my lamp if I had ordered online.

If you're serious about detail hobbies like painting miniatures or tying flies like me - I think you will find these lamps worth the money.

I got the big "tsk, tsk" from several professional painters about using my Ott. Some people think the light cast is much too blue.

Personally, I use my Ott, with the shades open and two other lights on when I paint.

If it works, go for it!

I know a few professional painters that use them. I know a couple of golden demon winners who do as well. That's part of the reason I decided to give one a try. I totally agree with your sentiment - if it works for you - go for it.
