Had my upper body day today, and it was a mixed bag. Made a few rep gains here and there on the pull movements, but my push movements--particularly incline press and triceps extensions--crashed out, losing a few reps. I think I see three contributing factors (besides age): my smoking, my diet, and my insomnia. I've mentioned here before that I'm a smoker. I've been an on-and-off again smoker for a long time, but it's come back from being socially smoking with a coworker to full on again, and I'm pretty sure it's having a negative effect on my lifting (let alone the obvious effects on my overall health). I'm a professor, and we had our spring break the week before last. I was good over break! And then came the week after. It was a very hairy week of catch up, meetings, and gearing up for the end of the semester. But it was also a very good week! My first single-authored book just went up for preorder (and it's coming out this summer)! But between the stress and adreneline, my smoking and sleeplessness ramped up, which has naturally affected my performance at the gym. I think I'm going to take what @Scribe and @Mannahnin have suggested to heart: small habit changes and adaptations over time rather than trying to do all the things at once. So, before I even try to address diet and insomnia, smoking has to be addressed first. The plan is to just stop buying them (duh!). I've found myself doing that to give the pack to my coworker as a way to pay back the cigarettes I bum when we take a walk/smoke break, but sometimes I get to hold on to the pack for awhile. The next thing to do, I think, is to limit the number of breaks. Then cut the breaks out entirely. I think this is doable over the course of the next week or two. We'll see how that goes and then address sleep hygiene.
