Poor Jana R.I.P. Jana, we all wish you a safe journey to the halls of Anubis. I actually quite enjoyed the conflict she brought to the party (luckily, Nemm's players seem mature enough to handle such conflicts and roleplay them without hurt feelings). That thing is tough! I think the party almost had it, but the casualties required to get close were harsh (frontline fighters mostly down). This in turn left few to attempt Jana's rescue before it was too late. As a retrospective, I'd like to re-open the "Jana's spells never work" discussion from another angle. Nemm, I know you roll well on saving throws, but is it possible that in 3E savings throws are too easy to make? In a recent campaign, I created a sorceror who was big on rays. I soon gave up on several very cool versions of "Ray of Enfeeblement" that affected STR, CON, and DEX in favor of more boring direct damage spells. I found that most enemies could easily save if I took on their strongest saves, while spells aimed at their weaker saves usually did not reduce their combat potential. It seems that, except for the known vulnerabilities of fighter types to Will saves (which usually involve mind-control effects, not what my character was about), it was just plain unsatisfying to use the flavor-enhancing spells that disable rather than cause damage, such as blindness, attribute-reducing spells, etc. It got so bad I invented a 4th level spell that reduced one of the target's saves by -4 just so I could get some of my neater spells to work at all. Not to hijack, but what does everyone think?
